ADVANCED LICENSE

You must meet the following criteria to receive the Advanced License.

All required forms and documentation must be submitted before your application can be reviewed.  Incomplete applications can not be processed.  Applicants are responsible for submitting all required materials. 

A renewable Advanced License may be granted for five (5) years to an applicant who submits the following:

1.  Submit an application.

Download the application for Advanced Hawaii Teaching License.  Submit your signed, dated application to HTSB. 

2.  If you answer "yes" to a question in the Professional Fitness section of the application, Section 2, you must submit the following with your application:

a)    Your signed statement with full explanation for each circumstance or incident, including the state in which the complaint, lawsuit, investigation or adverse action occurred and the disposition of the matter, as well as relevant explanation of the circumstances;

AND

b)    Certified copies of official court records for criminal convictions and official or notarized copies of documentation of other matters;

AND

c)    Two letters of recommendation addressed to the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board from people who have known you in a professional capacity within the last five years. References should include their telephone and email contact information as the letters and their content will be verified.

Additional documentation may be requested after the evaluation of your documents. 

NOTE: Failure to disclose information or providing false answers can lead to denial of your application.

3.  Submit proof of one of the following with your application:

      A.    An official transcript verifying you received a master's, specialist or doctoral degree from a regionally accredited institution. This degree must be in an area relevant to the teaching field for which a license is sought or a field that improves the practice of teaching. You may not use a degree that was used to obtain a Standard License to also obtain an Advanced License.

            OR

      B.   A notarized copy of your current, valid National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) certificate and a notarized copy of your current, valid out of state teaching license.  Hawaii licensed teachers do not need to submt a copy of their Standard License.

4.  Submit HTSB Verification of Qualifying Experience for Advanced License to document five (5) out of the last eight (8) years of satisfactory full-time teaching experience in the state which issued your Standard License.

5.  Pay the licensing fee.

The license fee of $240 (two hundred forty dollars) is the last requirement for your Advanced Hawai'i teaching license. Submit a cashier's check or money order made payable to the Hawai'i Teacher Standards Board (HTSB) with your application.  Currently, teachers employed by the Hawaii Department of Education will have the license fee deducted by mandatory payroll deduction and are not required to submit payment.  However, applicants should check the website for revisions to the fee payment procedure and additional bank charges once HTSB's online licensing system is launched.
